Stories and patakíes

Why the dog and the cat are enemies

There was a married couple that had a gold ring which was a talisman and whoever possessed it would have enough to live on, but the couple did not know it and one good day they sold it for little money.

As soon as they took the ring out of the house, the couple began to grow poor, not knowing where to look for money to feed themselves.

They had a dog and a cat who were hungry along with them.

The two animals hunkered down to see how they could help their masters and return their ring, which was their good fortune.

At last the dog found a way to get it back.

The cat said to the dog: the ring is well kept in a box that cannot be opened; the dog answered him: take a mouse so it can gnaw at the box and tell it that if it refuses you will eat it.

The cat took the dog's advice and thought it was good, it ran all the way to the river, followed by the dog, and when it got there, since the cat did not know how to swim, the dog carried it to the other shore.

At last the cat captured a mouse and went with it to the house where the ring was kept inside a wooden chest.

The mouse made a hole in it and they took out the ring.

The cat and the mouse arrived with the ring at the riverbank where the dog was waiting, they let the mouse go and the dog crossed the river with the cat on top.

When they reached the other side, they set off back to their masters, but the cat went ahead and arrived first with the ring.

The woman of the house, when she saw the cat with the ring, said: the dog may be very good, but the cat is smarter, for it was the one that gave us back the ring.

The husband said: the cat is a good animal, we will always give it food and we will take care of it as if it were a child.

When the dog heard that, it started barking and the couple insulted it and beat it, since they thought the dog had not worked in the search for the ring.

The cat, which was sitting there, washed its face without saying anything in the dog's favor, so the dog became angry with the cat upon realizing that it had usurped its reward, for it alone had come up with the way to recover the ring and it chased it, driving it out of the house, and every time the cat tried to enter it, it would pounce on it chasing it away, and from that day on the dog and the cat have been enemies.
