The parrot and the elephant

There was a parrot and an elephant who had managed to make a great friendship, one day the elephant went to visit his friend the parrot's house and to his great surprise he found that the chatterbox bird was resting on one of his legs.

The elephant, full of curiosity, asked him what was the cause of his misfortune, of the loss of his leg.

To which the parrot with much irony tells him that his children had taken it to the forest, because it was an infallible talisman so that the hunt would be abundant and good.

On the way back to his jungle the elephant, summoning his children, spoke to them like this:

See, from today our hunger will end forever.

I have visited my friend the parrot who has revealed to me the means of obtaining as many foodstuffs as we need without the need for great efforts.

You will cut off one of my legs to take it with you to the forest in search of food.

That will be our talisman.

Alarmed, not knowing what to think of their father, the old elephant, the children refused to carry out such a cruel order, but he, determined to follow the example of his friend the parrot, threatened them with terrible punishments if they did not obey.

With the pain that is supposed elephants who were good sons had no choice but to deprive the unfortunate elephant of one of his legs.

With the leg on their shoulders the little elephants set out in search of food, not knowing how to manage so that that useless member would serve as a talisman.

Tired and hopeless they decided to return home without having obtained anything of value with that leg that did nothing but hinder them, but their terror knew no bounds when, upon reaching home, they found their father who had just died amid horrible pains.

With laments and weeping accompanied by other elephant friends, the innocent father was buried at the foot of a tree that on many occasions had given shelter to his rest.

Intrigued, the children by the story their late father had told them and which was the cause of their misfortune, agreed to visit the famous parrot whom they found chirping on one of the branches of his leafy home, but how astonished they would be to see the parrot proudly walking with his two legs and not with one as their father had told them.

To clear up their doubts the eldest of the children, addressing the chatty parrot, spoke to him in this way:

How is it, parrot friend, that you have two legs when our father, your friend, the elephant, told us that you had removed one because it was a precious talisman for hunting.

The flapping and laughter of the parrot left the poor elephants bewildered, until, when his patience was exhausted, he answered them:

,But friends, have you ever heard of such a thing, could it be possible, your father was a victim of inexperience and the childishness that characterize you, despite being the largest of all animals.
